The Rasa.Studio publishing workflow is designed to streamline the development of websites, tabletop role-playing game design, related materials and other digital and print-on-demand publications. This method will also reduce the amount of “double-duty” on the processes involved when transitioning between systems.
The Rasa.Studio workflow dictates that document formatting must remain firm throughout all the various developmental phases avoiding any arduous transitions from one document type to another. From initial note-taking and development collaboration – with various co-authors, contributors, play-testers, proofreaders, editors, designers and artists – to the final publication, the primary format should remain as constant as possible. Exporting processes must be reduced to a minimum or altogether avoided. Exporting should only be utilized to produce the finished products, to include digital (.epub, .mobi, .pdf), print-ready (.pdf) and web (.html) formats.
Publication in web format (.html) are typically for online knowledgebases and to gather developmental, play-testing, and backer feedback. Web formats can also provide project marketing opportunities through additional material and resources such as social interaction, blog posts, downloads and even online e-commerce shops. Usually, this phase of a project is where most of the double-duty occurs, but with the proper procedures in place this process can be as painless as the rest.
Rasa.Studio utilizes a system of interlinking apps and platforms as outlined herein.
Traditionally, during the creation of digital or print publications, a format change is needed to incorporate the various demands of document layout-design. Transitioning from draft-mode to layout-design can be laboring, but with the proper procedures and translators in place, a worthy shift in format can be achieved.
InDesign is a desktop publishing application used by graphic designers. It can be used to create nearly any printed media such as marketing materials, magazines, newspapers, and books. InDesign is also suitable for publishing to tablet devices in conjunction with Adobe Digital Publishing Suite (a separate product). It also exports publications to .epub format for ebooks and other digital publications like ezines.
Markdown was designed by John Gruber and allows you to write using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text syntax, it can then be converted (using a Markdown editor or other tool) into several structured formats as needed. Originally, Markdown was a text-to-HTML conversion tool for web writers, but since its inception, has become a great too for all writers.
Markdown’s formatting syntax is designed to make it as readable and writable as possible, then be publishable as plain text, without looking like it’s been converted. As such, Markdown fulfills all the formatting requirements as it maintains all the necessary document structures and fluidity needed for authoring without the hassles or worries of design layout. As publications transition more and more from print to digital environments, the advantages of Markdown become even more apparent; Markdown is perfect for any developmental process.
Also, many Markdown editors can provide distraction-free writing environments and often export to many additional formats for previewing or final publication and distribution. In addition, many developmental and content management systems such as GitHub, WordPress and GRAV now utilize Markdown either optionally or as the preferred method of handling content.
Byword is designed to make writing in Markdown more efficient and productive. All the tools you need to write effectively on all your devices. With iCloud and Dropbox support, you can create and edit documents on your Mac and iPhone, but is especially effective on the iPad. Byword incorporates Markdown natively with support for tables and more. In-app previews allow you to view your document before final publication, and then simply export to .pdf, .html, rich text format, or publish to modern web platforms.
Also, InCopy, Adobe's word processor, uses the same engine as InDesign and can be utilized by project collaborators to work on the same InDesign file simutaniously.
Aside from professional editing services, advanced spelling and grammar checking is a significant step in the development of any publication. The placement of editing within the development process is important and should be as dynamic as possible; editing could occur during any phase depending on the demands of the project and its collaborators. Also, should professional services be required, there must be an avenue in-place for this level of collaboration.
Grammarly satisfies all editing requirements and advanced grammar checking services as necessary for the authoring process; this will catch many of the more common mistakes in spelling and grammar before being edited by a professional for the final draft. Grammarly has a desktop interface, or a web interface where one can upload Markdown files directly, or in-conjunction-with an online browser-based Markdown editor. Grammarly also offers (at an additional cost) built-in professional editing services for all uploaded documents.
GitHub has bee traditionally used for application development but has many valuable features useful to writers, publishers, and especially tabletop role-playing game (RPG) designers. Features such as Markdown usage (GitHub flavored), wikis, file repositories, syncing, versioning, project branching, forking, collaboration, feedback and issue tracking can all be used for the development of text documents and RPGs too. GitHub is an ideal platform to handle much of the development and feedback from users a project may demand.
Dropbox is an excellent, modern and versatile online storage asset and can be critical when developing and collaborating on documents. Dropbox connects to all sorts of devices across the spectrum including virtual private servers (VPS) for transferring files directly to a flat-file content management system. Dropbox also has file versioning; this makes Dropbox the perfect proving ground as a collaborative development workspace for individuals and teams alike.
Grav is fast flat-file content management system with sophisticated caching for optimal performance. Publishing content is just simple Markdown files in a hierarchy of folders, with no complicated databases. Plugins extend Grav, and a comprehensive package manager provides easy installation and updating of extensions. Flexible Twig templating allows the easy realization of designs.
LeanPub is a publishing platform that fulfills many of our workflow requirements. Co-founded in 2010 with the intention of building a platform for authors and publishers, LeanPub is designed from the ground-up to write and publish “in-progress” ebooks. LeanPub has been growing steadily, evolving in response to feedback from early-adopter authors, publishers and followers alike. So far our authors have earned over $2.9 million in royalties, and readers have downloaded over half a million books.
LeanPub is a powerful platform capable of handling many authoring and publishing tasks; translating documents written in Markdown to .epub, .mobi, .pdf (including print-ready versions) and .indd (InCopy/InDesign formats). LeanPub can even generate a basic .html website based upon the project documents. LeanPub links natively with Dropbox where it supports all features, but can also link to GitHub and BitBucket with a limited feature-set. LeanPub also offers complete online feedback and shopping solutions for authors and publishers.
Using Leanpub’s amazing writing and publishing tools, Sigillum-Rasa can produce books and put it up for sale in the Leanpub bookstore with a mere click. Plus Rasa.Studio can also upload books we have created using our own production processes and then sell them in the Leanpub bookstore, taking advantage of the in-progress publishing features.
Serial, In-Progress and Lean Publishing
Using Leanpub, Sigillum-Rasa can start publishing our books before they are finished. Publishing a book before it’s finished allows us to interact with our early readers and improve the book in a number of ways. Readers will receive all future updates of the book for free, as new content is added and as the book is otherwise improved. At the same time, readers can provide us with suggestions and even corrections; LeanPub will act as a great proofreading platform for Sigillum-Rasa’s authors!
In the world of fiction, the chapter-by-chapter publication of books as they are being written has a long history. For example, many great nineteenth-century books were initially published serially, including novels by Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Elizabeth Gaskell. Novels written this way are are usually not finished before the first chapters are published, and writers can even change their projects based on the responses they get from their audience.
In the twenty-first century, in-progress publishing is a great way to publish non-fiction books too. Role-playing game sourcebooks are perhaps the most obvious example of a book category that naturally fits the Lean Publishing model, since things move very quickly during game development and early access to cutting-edge ideas and mechanics is so important.

With our unique resource pool technology, dedicated systems resources can be allocated to an individual website. This is particularly useful if your website requires extra CPU and RAM, but is not yet ready for its own server. Just ask for Rasa.Boost!
Rasa.Shield is a Web Application Firewall (WAF) protection system to prevent common CSS and SQL injection attacks. Rasa.Shield receives daily updates to protect against the latest threats and provides “virtual patching” to further protect Joomla, WordPress and Drupal websites!
Every website deployed at Rasa.Studio is “caged”, segregating it completely from other websites. This provides premium protection, without a costly dedicated plan or separate servers. Each primary domain requires its own cPanel.
Rasa.Studio runs a fully-managed service for our web design clients. Managed updates are available for popular scripts like WordPress and others to ensure your websites are always running the latest, most secure version. We also offer security-hardened installations of these applications during account activation.
Rasa.Studio utilizes LiteSpeed Web Servers (LSWS), a high-performance Apache drop-in replacement. LSWS is the 4th most popular web server on the internet and the #1 commercial web server available today! LiteSpeed Web Server is compatible with commonly used Apache features, including mod_rewrite, .htaccess, and mod_security. LSWS can load Apache configuration files directly and works as a drop-in replacement for Apache with hosting control panels — replacing Apache took less than 15 minutes with zero downtime. Unlike other frontend proxy-based solutions, LSWS replaces all Apache functions, simplifying use and made the transition from Apache smooth and easy.
Performance and Stability
With its streamlined event-driven architecture, LiteSpeed Web Server can serve thousands of clients concurrently with minimal memory consumption and CPU usage. LSWS’s highly optimized code serves static content faster, taking advantage of high-performance kernel syscalls, while LSAPI maximizes PHP performance. LSWS serves users, handles traffic spikes, and neutralizes DDoS attacks without adding any new hardware.
LiteSpeed Web Server is mod_security compatible and has a host of built-in anti-DDoS features, like bandwidth and connection throttling. We work constantly to address the Internet’s newest security issues — such as SSL BEAST attacks — and release security updates as soon as new attack methods become known. LiteSpeed Web Server is also supported on Atomicorp’s Realtime ModSecurity Rules and Atomic Secured Linux.
Reduces Support Costs
LiteSpeed’s licensing cost is generally far less than the hardware upgrade required to pursue (and not necessarily attain) the same results with Apache. Switching to LiteSpeed Web Server was quick and painless with minimal costs during the switch. LSWS will reduce the support costs in the long run by allowing us to keep the hosting control panel and interface many users are already familiar with while and relieving us of the troubles of overloaded servers. It’s even supported by cPanel!
LiteSpeed Load Balancer (LSLB) is a high-performance HTTP load balancer application. LSLB is feature-rich, secure, and efficient, offering more flexibility than similarly-priced load balancing software. This makes it an excellent choice to scale applications beyond one server — both to improve service speed as well as reliability in case of hardware failure.
LiteSpeed Server Application Programming Interface (LSAPI) is designed specifically for seamless, optimized communication between LiteSpeed Web Server and third party web applications. Using LSAPI with LSWS, we have seen 50% greater performance than Apache with mod_php. LSWS plus LSAPI means faster, more stable dynamic web pages.
LiteSpeed’s anti-DDoS proxy service allows us to redirect traffic to our LiteSpeed specialized servers for intelligent web traffic filtering when they are under attack. LiteSpeed’s proxy service can defend against many of the common HTTP attacks that websites face, allowing us to forgo other high-cost DDoS protection plans.
Solid State Drives
A solid-state drive (SSD) is a data storage device that uses integrated circuit assemblies as memory to store data persistently instead of a spinning disk drive. Because SSDs have no moving (mechanical) parts this distinguishes them from traditional electromechanical magnetic disks such as traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) which contain movable read/write heads. Compared with standard hard drives, SSDs are more resistant to physical shock, run silently, have lower access time, and less latency; this means they are fast!
Data transfer (a.k.a. bandwidth) is the amount of data sent to or from our servers via your account. Typically, most other web hosts will set a limit on this data and change extra for large amounts of data transfer. Our bandwidth is unthrottled and unrestricted with full access to our Internet backbone providers. We want you to have the resources you need to build a significant online presence.
Working like a time capsule, through cPanel itself, files and databases can be easily restored and website scripts like Joomla, WordPress and Drupal can be fully rolled back to an earlier date. All of your SSD-stored data is backed up every day to an off-server secure RasaVault with restore points spanning 30 days. Or, if you would like to restore a previous backup, just contact us with the request.
In addition, backing up data is simple with cPanel software’s “Backup Wizard.” With a few clicks, cPanel software will make a full backup of your databases, email, and websites, which you can download to your computer or send to another server over SCP or FTP.
Our clients are allowed to host an unlimited number of add-on and sub-domains per account. Add-on domain and sub-domain hosting allows unique domains to be parked on top of the primary domain or pointed to a specific folder.
Web site owners can use cPanel software to create email accounts, available through the standard protocols including POP, IMAP, and SMTP, all with or without SSL encryption. cPanel software also supports Push Email via IMAP IDLE, enabling fast incoming and outgoing mail delivery designed with mobile users in mind.
cPanel software provides several web-based interfaces for checking email, including Horde, Roundcube, and SquirrelMail. You have the ability to access your email from any web browser, as well as configure many account options including email forwarding and auto-responders.
To reduce spam, cPanel software gives you the option of using powerful spam filters, SpamAssassin, and BoxTrapper. These powerful utilities analyze your incoming mail, looking at the source and content of the message, as well as comparing it to lists of known spammers. You can also setup spam filter rules that route messages to a spam folder, helping to keep your inbox uncluttered at all times.
cPanel users can set up email forwarding that allows account holders to have an address for one domain and forward incoming messages to another.
For power users, mail filtering is available for improved organization and handling of incoming mail, as well as a mailing list function to enable your users to engage in discussions via email.
cPanel makes life easier for website owners, offering powerful tools to help you to perform essential tasks quickly, easily, and reliably. cPanel for website owners provides the world’s most familiar user interfaces for managing a website. With cPanel software, website owners can easily manage their email accounts, databases, applications, security, FTP, and control every aspect of their websites within the confines of your hosting plan.
For detailed information describing the features of the cPanel interface, please visit the official cPanel User Documentation website.
